Obituary for Alma Jean Austin Rigdon

Alma Jean Austin Rigdon, 90, of Andrews passed away on Sunday, September 2, 2018 in Andrews surrounded by her family.

Family and friends will gather to celebrate her life at 10:00 AM Friday, September 7, 2018 at the Second Baptist Church, 107 NW 7th Street, in Andrews with Pastor Kevin Covington officiating. Interment will follow in the Andrews West Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 – 8 PM on Thursday at McNett Funeral Home. Please celebrate her life by visiting

Alma was born on May 27, 1928 in Uniontown, Kentucky to Nolan Emory Austin and Neely Louise Morris. She was raised in the Dixie and Corydon, Kentucky and graduated from Corydon High School. She married Arthur Franklin Rigdon on February 12, 1956 in East St. Louis, Missouri. They moved to Hobbs, New Mexico in 1956 from Kentucky and then to Andrews in 1960. She had managed the Ranch House restaurant in Andrews, but had been a homemaker most of her life and being a full time Mom and Granny. She enjoyed traveling, birdwatching, collecting bird figurines, crocheting, and making bed spreads and table cloths for her family. Her husband and her were always taking people in and giving them a place to stay and eat. She was a two-time cancer survivor and had been a long time member and Sunday School teacher at Second Baptist Church.

Alma was preceded in death by her husband on January 24, 1993, father, Nolan Austin, mother, Neely Hogan, daughter, Nelda Sue Rigdon, son, Richard Frederick, 3 sisters, Helen Pumphreys, Nola Rosso, Reta Waack, 2 brothers, Nolan “Bud” Austin and Wayne Hogan, grandson, Ethan Lee, and great granddaughter, Macy Grace Dyer.

Alma is survived by her 5 children, Floyd Frederick and wife, Patsy, of Sturgis, Kentucky, Alma Dyer and husband, Lonnie, of Andrews, David Frederick and wife, Deborah, of Brownwood, Debra Kirtley and husband, Earnest, of Sturgis, Kentucky, and Ival Rushing and husband, Rick, of Andrews, 1 sister, Margeret Turner of Providence, Kentucky, 1 daughter in law, Carmen Frederick of Hobbs, New Mexico, 24 grandchildren, 50 great grandchildren, and 22 great great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, and cousins, and many people that though of her as “Granny”.

Memorials may be sent to the Second Baptist Church, 107 NW 7th Street, Andrews, Texas 79714.
