Obituary for James "Hard Luck" Edwin Moxley

James Edwin Moxley, 86, of Andrews passed away on Friday, August 24, 2018 in Brownfield.

Family and friends will gather to celebrate his life at 10:00 AM Wednesday, August 29, 2018 at the Second Baptist Church, 107 NW 7th Street, in Andrews with Pastor Kevin Covington, officiating. Military graveside honors will follow in the Andrews Old Cemetery and services are under the personal care of McNett Funeral Home in Andrews. Please celebrate his life by visiting www.mcnettfuneralhome.com.

James was born on April 18, 1932 in Ropesville, Texas to Rayburn Payne Moxley and Flo Helen Forbus Moxley. He had lived in Andrews most of his life and graduated from Andrews High School. He served as aircraft mechanic in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He had worked for Lockheed Martin in Clearlake, California as an aircraft mechanic and for the Laughlin Air Force Base in Del Rio as a sheet metal mechanic and retired from Civil Service. He moved back to Andrews in the 1960’s, where his father and him had Moxley & Son Construction. He had also worked for Kinney, Inc. He was a self-accomplished contractor and brick layer and a jack of all trades. He enjoyed tinkering, Air Force memorabilia, fishing, and dancing and flirting with the women. He was a Baptist, Free Mason, and a member of the Eagles, Moose, and Odd Fellows Lodge in Andrews. He married Charlotte Delores Cotton on July 11, 1954 in Portsmouth, Virginia. He had married Maxine Zina Fuller Derrick on April 7, 1965 in Las Vegas, Nevada, and she preceded him in death on June 13, 1988. He had married Bobbie Ruth Hudson Hicks on August 15, 1988 in Las Vegas, Nevada, and she preceded him in death on January 6, 2002.

James started working at the early age of 6 at a filling station, where he swept out floorboards and earned about 10 cents a day. He gave his earnings to his mother to help buy food for the family. As told by his sister, one of the highlights of her childhood in the 1940's, was when he bought tickets for the whole family to the Ringling Brothers Circus. The whole family loaded up in a Model A Ford to go to the circus, which took them all night to travel to Odessa and back. "Hard Luck" was the name James was known by. He had a flat almost every day on his bicycle, that's how he earned his nickname. He was known for wanting to help others. He always tried to do the right thing and wanted to be the leader of his family. He had a way of captivating the attention of the children in his family. Whether it was the contraption he had invented by putting a dimmer switch in the floorboard of his car or to magically turn on the radio when you pointed at the radio, creating motorcycle out of scraps, or making a homemade doll house. He was known to give thrill rides in his boat, pulled many skiers, motorcycle rides and was always trying to talk one the kids into going snipe hunting. One niece recalls how he would let her play beauty shop with his hair and let her roll his hair and fashion it with bobby pins. His memory will be cherished by his surviving family members.

James is survived by his son, James Edwin Moxley, II, and wife, Eunice, of Andrews, 2 brothers, Bob Moxley and wife, Darlene, of Kerrville and Johnny Ray Carwile and wife, Jo, of Lakeside, 1 sister, Betty Carruth of Maysville, Oklahoma, 4 grandchildren, Courtney Warner and husband, Robert, Jamie Thurman and husband, Temple, James P. Moxley, and Christopher Moxley, 6 great grandchildren, James, II mother, Dee Fortress, and many nieces and nephews who loved him and will miss him dearly.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Rayburn Payne Moxley and Flo Helen Forbus Clemons, brother, William Ray Moxley, 2 sisters, Mary Helen Moxley Carwile Johnson and Patsy Ann Redd, nephew, Jimmy Lynn Fornash, and great niece, Ashley Nicole Fornash.

Memorials may be sent to a military charity of your choice.
