G.H. “Blackie” Smyers, 91, of Odessa passed away on Sunday, June 10, 2018 in Odessa.
Family and friends will gather to celebrate his life at 2:00 PM Thursday, June 14, 2018 at McNett Funeral Home Chapel and the family will receive friends from 1 – 2 PM on Thursday at the funeral home. Blackie was born on November 16, 1926 in Rochester, Texas to Roy Morgan Smyers and Myrtle Rebecka Hancock. He was raised and attended schools in Globe, Arizona. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and met and married his wife in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on July 27, 1946, while he was decommissioning the ship he served on. They moved to Andrews in 1946, where he worked for Gulf Oil Company for 33 years. He was very involved in the Andrews Volunteer Fire Department, where he served as Fire Chief for many years and played on their softball team. He enjoyed polka and square dancing. He was a member of the Star Thru Square Dance Club. He was a member of the American Legion and the Oil Burners Antique Car Club in Odessa. He enjoyed spending time at his summer cabin in Northern, Arizona with his family. He was transferred with his job to Odessa in 1975. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, James “Red” Smyers, and sister, Eva Smyers Hartley.
Blackie is survived by his wife, Julie A. Smyers of Odessa, 2 sons, Mike Smyers and wife, Candy, of Denver City and Roy Smyers and wife, Cindy, of Odessa, daughter, Glenda Ann Powers and husband, Tom, of York Valley, Arizona, brother, John “Neal” Smyers of Lubbock, sister, Mary Catherine Wall of Andrews, 4 grandchildren, Brittni Hill, Tiffany Powers, Seth Smyers, and Shannon Dean, and 2 great grandchildren, Wyatt Alamo Dean and Michael Thomas Hill.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Hospice of Midland, Alzheimer’s Association or the Andrews Volunteer Fire Department.
