Senior Chief Petty Officer, James L. “Jim” Sawyer, Retired, 65, of Abilene passed away on Wednesday, May 9, 2018 in Abilene.

Family and friends will gather to celebrate his life at 10:00 AM Monday, May 14, 2018 at McNett Funeral Home Chapel in Andrews with Pastor Glenn Hammack officiating and military funeral honors will follow. Visitation will be on Sunday from 2 PM – 8 PM, and the family will receive friends from 5 PM – 7 PM at the funeral home. Cremation is under the personal care of McNett Funeral Home, and Jim’s cremains will be buried at sea by the U.S. Navy. Please celebrate his life by visiting

Jim was born on June 20, 1952 in Rotan, Texas to James Weldon Sawyer and Mary Frances Cooper Sawyer. In his earlier years in Andrews, he attended school and the Second Baptist Church. He faithfully served for 26 years in the U.S. Navy in the Vietnam Conflict and the Gulf War and retired as an E-8 Senior Chief Petty Officer. He served all over the world and had been injured on the USS Midway. He has lived in Abilene since 1997 after he retired from the military. While in Abilene, he had worked at Red’s Satellite Services and as a mechanic at the marina at Lake Fort Phantom Hill. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and collecting and working on old cars. He was preceded in death by his father and his brother, Gene Sawyer. His nephews and nieces have known him as “Uncle Bo”.

Jim is survived by his mother, Frances Sawyer of Andrews, 4 siblings, Johnny Sawyer of Andrews, Mitch Sawyer and wife, Michelle, of Andrews, Venita Shellman and husband, Mike, of Anaheim, CA, and Joretta Woods and husband, Ken, of College Station, 6 nephews, Jay Sawyer, Bryan Sawyer, Steven Sawyer, Scott Grolemund, Kyle Sawyer, and Kevin Sawyer, 7 nieces, Amy Sawyer, Brandi Sawyer, Kim Grolemund, Randa Richardson, Lindsey Wiley, Christi Moore, and Johnna Sawyer, and numerous great nephews and nieces.
