Sep 26, 2011
Location of Service:

Rev. Russell Reed Gipson, Jr., passed away Monday September 26, 2011 at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa, Texas.

He was born June 30, 1928 in Osage County, Oklahoma to Parents Russell and Zula Gipson. He was the 5th of six children.

He gave his heart to Jesus at the age of nineteen. Reed graduated from Southwestern Assemblies of God University. In the year 1950 he married Wilma Jean Bascom. They had four children, Susan, Rusty, Randy and Dennis. Wilma went to be with the Lord in 1976. In October 1978 Reed married Gwendolyn Davis and also welcomed her four children Dwain, Max, Karen and Daina. He was so proud of his children and grandchildren and delighted in having them near him.  He always had a kind word to say, a smile on his face, and a song to lift your spirit. Reed was a wonderful, kind and caring man that was loved by many. There was a song and a joke for every situation. He served as pastor for numerous churches during his 60 years in the ministry and had many lifelong friends. Reed will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Visitation will be held at Bethel Assembly of God Church in Odessa, Thursday from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM.

Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Friday at Bethel Assembly of God Church. Reed’s sons Rusty and Dennis will officiate. Graveside services will be 4:00 Saturday at Maple City Cemetery in Maple City, Kansas, under the direction of McNett Funeral Home.

Reed was preceded in death by his first wife Wilma and sons Randy and Max daughter Susan and grandchildren Jamie, Trace and Brittney.

He is survived by his wife, Gwendolyn, son Rusty and wife Pam, and children Russell, Greg, Tammy and Rachel; Son Dennis and wife Delma and children Shea, Chance, Jessica and Amarylis; son Dwain and wife Anne and children Lisa, Tal, and Brandi; daughter Karen and husband Dan; daughter Windy; Daughter Daina and children Steven and Hali;  Grandchildren Christie, Misty and Perry; and over 30 great-grandchildren.

#11 Walter & Thelma Hudson 2011-09-28 18:53 Gwen and family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. God is holding Reed in His arms and holding you in His heart. There's a sense of sadness that comes with saying good-bye for now to our very good brother in Christ that we love dearly. He is with God. He lives with God now. We can't see around this curve in the road or over this hill, but God does. Quote

#12 Butch and Sharon Hunt 2011-09-29 00:32 Aunt Gwen and family, we were saddened to hear of Reed's homegoing. When he came into our Davis family, he brought joy and laughter and his deep love of the Lord was evident. God bless you all and keep you is our prayer. Even though we are unable to be there for the memorial, we will be with you in prayer and thoughts. God be with you all on this celebration day, celebrating a life lived for the Lord. Won't it be wonderful at that greatest family reunion in Heaven? Quote

#16 Marty Younger 2011-09-29 18:18 The bible says that we have many teachers, but very few fathers. Bro. Reed Gipson was truly a Father in the Faith. Because of his faithfulness to the call, on June 15, 1971, a new name was written down in glory, and it's mine! He was truly my hero and I know a hero to many many more. He will truly be missed , but never forgottren! My deepest condolences to the family and my prayers are with you! Quote
